Exploring Voltis

Innovation is part of our philosophy at Evening Sky Vineyard.

In 2025, we became one of the first vineyards in Oregon to plant Voltis, a next-generation PIWI grape variety. PIWI (from the German Pilzwiderstandsfähig, meaning “fungus-resistant”) refers to grape varieties developed through traditional crossbreeding to offer natural resistance to common vineyard diseases, reducing the need for vineyard spray applications while supporting more sustainable farming.

Voltis was developed in France and approved for planting in the Champagne region, where it is being evaluated as part of the region’s long-term strategy to address changing environmental conditions while preserving the quality and character for which Champagne is renowned. We believe its potential represents an exciting step forward for the future of viticulture.

At Evening Sky Vineyard, we planted Voltis because it aligns with our commitment to thoughtful stewardship, innovation, and continuous learning. As the vines mature, we plan to incorporate Voltis into future sparkling wine offerings, combining sustainable farming with the craftsmanship and elegance that define our estate. We look forward to sharing this exciting journey—and the wines it inspires—in the years ahead.
